Use the double quotes as part of his 1st name:

 John Edward Frederick Smith becomes

John Edward "Frederick" Smith

In reports, you can specific the full name is used the 1st time and then
the quoted name (Frederick) is used thereafter.

Is there a way to highlight a commonly used Christian name?

For example: birth name is John Edward Frederick Smith.

He is referred to as Frederick Smith in marriage record, census and/or
death notice. Perhaps to distinguish him from his father John Edward
Frederick Smith, called John.

Something that would be apparent: John Edward *Frederick* Smith. John
Edward *Frederick* Smith. John Edward *Frederick* Smith. etc.

Thanks
