Weren't we advised this was off topic and should be pursued by email to concerned individuals only?

Film circulates, books don't. If you've only one day, then you want to pick low-hanging fruit -- things that can /probably/ be found easily and quickly on a reel of microfilm. If you've got a week, pick the 3 items you want worst and look for them one at a time. If you've an entire month, spend one to three days researching each area you're working. The FHL's website used to have a map of the building showing where the copy machines are and that sort of thing. They also used to have a trip-planning guide. I say "used to have" because I haven't looked for them since the 2013 revamp and don't know if they've been removed.
