The staff at the FHL has the ability to assist you and are more than happy to.
They won’t follow you around but will guide you to what you need and your stay
will be productive.

Plan out what you want to accomplish, who it is you are looking for and in what
areas of the country you think you would like to search for this person. Bring
along, I am assuming you have it on your computer, and an idea of what you are
seeking so the Family History Consultant can look it over and steer you in the
right direction. Think of it as your road map and you want to get from point a
to point b, but are unsure of the roads. They are great at assisting that is
what they are there for. If you don’t connect with one ask for someone else,
you won’t offend them, they know your time at the Library is valuable and want
it to be a good experience. The right consultant will make all the difference
in the world. Most all of the people are there serving a full time mission for
the church and have been trained in serving in the Library to help make the
patrons visit there productive.

I will be interested in what you have to say when you get back.

And I agree with Autumn Brown, you definitely want to get to the books first on
you subject, books don’t circulate, films and fiche do. You can always request
them at a FHC near you. Bring coins for the copy machine, or set up an
account, I can’t remember how it worked there. And DOCUMENT everything you
find and make note of what you don’t find so you don’t go back to the same
material again. That is always a waste of time and energy. It takes time at
the moment but saves time in the long run.

Well that was wordy and you probably knew it all anyway.

Weren't we advised this was off topic and should be pursued by email to
concerned individuals only?

It's probably too late to do Autumn any good but --

If you are going to the FHL for the first, and perhaps Only,
time -- do the books first. Film circulates, books don't.

If you've only one day, then you want to pick low-hanging
fruit -- things that can /probably/ be found easily and
quickly on a reel of microfilm.

If you've got a week, pick the 3 items you want worst and
look for them one at a time.

If you've an entire month, spend one to three days
researching each area you're working.

The FHL's website used to have a map of the building showing
where the copy machines are and that sort of thing. They
also used to have a trip-planning guide.

I say "used to have" because I haven't looked for them since
the 2013 revamp and don't know if they've been removed.
