Thanks Kathy,
Doesn’t work unfortunately – still says unknown. I’m wondering if it is a
glitch with the unknown vs blank issue.

try this - not sure if it will work the way you want though, but it appears to
work for me if I had this situation

On the family view with your adopted child as the selected person, click on the
parents icon (4th from right under the person's brief info)

In that "Parents of (name)" pop up, set the "Relationship to Mother" to
Adopted, and tick the Private box against "Relationship to father"

Then click close and run your report again

fingers crossed that gives the result you want.

  Hi,
I have a solo mother on my tree who has adopted a child and I can’t get rid
of the “unknown” father on the reports.
I have read past posts and tried the following:
Under customise, I have turned the unknown to just leave blank. but it still
comes up.
  Tried the did not marry.
Tried leaving private, but then the daughter isn’t printed either.
  I am using Legacy 7.5
  Thanks for any help
