This isn't really what you wanted, but it may be a decent work-around:
Add a "spouse" with a name of "None" or "No spouse" or "single parent"
or "unwed adoption" or "single adoption" or some such thing.  At least
that way when it shows up in a report it will be somewhat obvious there
here is no spouse involved.

In other words, if ya can't fight 'em, join 'em . . .
