I agree that genie programs ought to allow us to show a parent-child relationship without assuming the parent was married.
However: A child by biological imperative ALWAYS has two parents. So it is relatively reasonable for programs to make the assumption. And since waaaaay too many families have generation after generation of same-name married same-name (every Charles for 5 generations married Elizabeth sort of thing) it is fatally easy to marry Charles5 to Elizabeth3, the necessity of entering both parents (or one and UNKN) is a check against that.
