An interesting approach.

Do you happen to know if this method would include the pseudo marriages created 
when a child is born out of wedlock? I suspect it will.

On this point I am wondering if it may be possible to exclude marriages where a 
partner has a RIN = 0. Or maybe exclude those where "this couple did not marry" 
is set. Worth playing with?
