I use the UserID as a two letter alphabetic code which identified the root of the particular subtree followed by a modified Dollarhide number within the subtree. The sorting seems to be standard alphanumeric ignoring the fact that part of it is a number, so for example DN1024.0 will come before DN2.0
I did briefly experiment with filling out the numeric part with leading zeroes but gave up when I realized that (a) it looks ridiculous and, more importantly, (b) it means I have to decide on an upper limit on the number of individuals in advance.
