John,
I would like to add that this is a good way to corrupt your database.  If you 
leave Legacy on overnight and Windows decides to do a software update and a 
reboot it could mess your file up.  Also, a good power surge or an outage can 
do the same thing.   It is a good idea to close down Legacy when you are not 
actively using it.

The check for a new update is only made when the program starts. Or, when 
clicking on the Updates header on the Home tab.
