Ok, I did a check/repair (found a problem), check/repair, shut down, and did the check/repair about 3 more times (no problems). Now I can re-attach the pictures to the sources but when I reattach to the event using the individual media gallery it won't stick and isn't there when I re-open. But if I use the media center it sticks.
