I can think of several ways to handle this just off the top of my head...

But primarily, my sources tell me who I've delved into, and who is
simply garnered from another's family tree, if I want to check on that.
If the source is only another person, then I've not sighted any
documents to prove what they told me.

You could use a specific Legacy tag to indicate the people who need
closer inspection/investigation. When you've taken those steps with a
tagged person, remove the tag. You can always create a fresh list of the
people with that tag by searching on it, so it will not matter if you've
made other searches in the meantime and lost the previous list.

You could make a new event for this purpose, and add it to everyone you
want to investigate at a later date. They can be found quickly with a
search for that event.  You can make that event show in Family View as
one of the five fields displayed for the couple in the middle.

You could put a note in one of the Note fields.

This should give you some food for thought. :-)
