Yes, the use of locations has been discussed many times here. They are also based on today’s “Postal Codes” which did not exist that long ago.
Bottom line: they are only based on today’s world and no history. Treat them as suggestions for today’s world, I would use the names of place at the time of the event, not today’s. When inputting this into Legacy, it told me that Nowata County was not founded till 1907. So I googled Oklahoma counties and found that Nowata’s parent entity was “Cooweescoowee District of Cherokee Nation <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_Nation> ;” how do I list this person’s birthplace? Is there an explanation on the web as to how to cite Indian lands in Oklahoma that did not become U.S. counties till the 1910s or thereabouts?
