Michele,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I should not have relied on my distant cousin's
correct naming of the county of his ancestor's birth. I will write him on the
off chance there is/was an Overbrook in Nowata County. Your advice on how to
cite the place of birth makes good sense and I wills save it as a model for
similar scenarios.

Barton,
One thing, Overbrook shows to be in present day Love County which is nowhere
near Nowata. I have never done research in OK before so maybe there are two
Overbrooks but Animap confirms this. According to Animap, Overbrook was in the
Pickens District within the Chickasaw Nation in 1892. This is way in the
south. Cooweescoowee District is in the north.

So how would I do the location? I would put

Overbrook, Pickens District, Chickasaw Nation

There is a Rootsweb page for Pickens District here
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~itpicken/ It too lists Overbrook.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Oklahoma!

I was entering the birth date of a distant cousin, born in Overbrook, Nowata
County, Oklahoma in 1892, according to a descendant’s tree on Ancestry. When
inputting this into Legacy, it told me that Nowata County was not founded till
1907. So I googled Oklahoma counties and found that Nowata’s parent entity was
“Cooweescoowee District of Cherokee Nation;” how do I list this person’s
birthplace? Is there an explanation on the web as to how to cite Indian lands
in Oklahoma that did not become U.S. counties till the 1910s or thereabouts?
This is not the first time I have come across this problem.

Thanks,

Barton
