If you know the father of the child Jenny Benson's answer is what you should do. If you do not know the father though here is how you can link the child to the mother and an "unknown" spouse.
Unlink the child from all his existing parents Select the child in Family View (his parent area should be empty) Right click on the child and select Add Mother Use the Link to an Existing person button Choose the mother from the Name list that opens Click the select button to add him/her as a child of the mother. This will create a "marriage" between the mother and an unknown (non-existent) spouse. The person will be a child of this union.
