I don't recommend relying on RINs and MRINs for filing your papers - there are times when you need to renumber the RINs and MRINs and the numbers you have filed by may be changed. Also if you're not super careful when doing a merge, you could lose the RIN or MRIN you filed by.
I think the Ancestor Color Coding system is much more reliable. There's an article on the MRIN system at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/filing.asp and on the Color Coding system at http://www.genrootsorganizer.com/ (all those colors are so cheerful as well! Good for the more visually oriented.....) If you want to use the RINs and MRINs, before you start, I recommend that you copy the RINs and MRINs to the User ID field by going to Options > Customize 12.4. Then while you're still in Options > Customize, go to 8.2 and change to display User ID on hte Name Lists and Family View and Pedigree View. Then go to Name List and under Options select to Show User ID in List. Do the same on the Index view, except it's worded "Change Sort/Search to User ID" Now you don't have to worry about the numbers changing. You do have to remember to add the RIN for newly added individuals to the User ID field in the Individual Information window and the MRIN for new marriages to the User ID field in the Marriage Information window. If you have both User ID and RIN showing on the Index View, you can quickly see the RIN of the new person. The MRIN continues to show on the Marriage List window so you can see the new MRIN there.
