Cathy, I'm sorry as I seem to have muddied the waters a little with my ending remark about Comments from Master Sources being exported on GEDCOMS. Let's leave those points for a different thread.
Back to the problem that Genealogy Bob first brought up when he was surprised about seeing these Master Source Comments included on the Footnote/Citation as shown on the Assigned Sources window. You have brought up a very good point that there are two radio buttons at the bottom: "Show Entire Source" and "Show Source using Print Options". I believe that by default the "Show Entire Source" is selected. Maybe what I didn't realize that Show Entire Source is a preview of the footnote/citation temporarily ignoring the checkmarks on the Comments tab of the Master Source as to whether the comments are to be included on reports or not. If one were to select the other radio button to Show Source using Print Options, then the Comments from the Master Source are not included if the Comments tab from the Master Source has the checkmark to Not Include on reports. In other words, if the user did not want the comments included on reports, then they are left out. So, Genealogy Bob, go back and look at the footnote/citation on the source you described in your first post and then select the other radio button to "Show Source using Print Options", and I'll bet you'll be happy. In other words, your comments will not appear in that presentation of the footnote/citation. If you want, toggle back and forth by selecting "Show Entire Source" and then selecting "Show Source using Print Options" and you'll see your comments appear and dis-appear (assuming you have your comments selected to be NOT included on reports on the Master Source Comment tab). Let me make that perfectly clear to all....in my opinion, this option about including Master Source Comments on reports or not including Master Source Comments on reports is working perfectly as designed in Legacy. And upgrading to the latest version won't change anything about this feature. It has been working perfectly for at least several versions prior to the current release and probably back to the original release. Now, elaborating about my real concern...it's the very first option of Show Entire Source. As should be now clear to all, Master Source Comments will show up on the preview of the footnote/citation regardless of the choice to include them on reports or not but ONLY when you have selected the first option to Show Entire Source. Maybe that's a good thing to see or not, but what we all want to really know is how the footnote/citation would look using the Print Options selection. I'm even wondering why there is the first option to preview the Entire Source when the user's selection to include certain information or not would change the footnote/citation. Now here is the other part that makes this first option to Show Entire Source seem like something is wrong somewhere. If the user were to go to Customize 7.2 and remove the checkmark to Include Master Source Comments on reports, notice that this is a FF setting which will apply to the current Family File. Now, you'd think that these Master Source Comments would never be seen in a footnote/citation yet when you go back again and highlight a source on the Assigned Sources window, you'll see the same footnote/citation preview at the bottom with the Master Source Comment included. You'd think that the Customization 7.2 would make them invisible yet they still show up on the preview when Show Entire Source is selected. So in my mind, the option to "Show Entire Source" over-rides the customization settings, sort of like an all-powerful option. I'm trying to grasp the intended use of the Show Entire Source option especially when it can over-ride customization settings. I'm not so sure that's what the programmers intended. This thread seems to have got complicated while I've been offline overnight. Whether or not Master Source Comments are included in a Gedcom should be controlled by whether you export the Source just with the print options OR choose to override these and export everything. I don't know whether this works with respect to Master Source Comments as I don't use them much and I don't use Gedcoms much. Brian, If you put comments into Legacy that you want to be always Private, put them in Privacy brackets and don't override these when reporting or exporting. When you are on the Assigned Sources screen and highlight a Source, you see a preview on the Output tab at the bottom. This has two radio buttons on it - Show Entire Source and Show Source Using Print Options. Are these bug free? It seems to depend on the actual source and which combinations of checkboxes have been used. These same options are there when you look at the Master Source list. I don't think they are working properly there. Bob, If you don't want the detailed source comments included in a source citation, you have to untick that checkbox on the screen where you added the comment. I don't know why you'd go back and recheck it even if you think there is a bug with the preview IF you don't actually want the text included. Yes you should upgrade. There is no point troubleshooting a problem in a previous version. I nearly always download the file and install rather than using the Home Tab. A corrupt download won't usually run. With earlier versions of Legacy, the download from the Home tab was selective and only downloaded the files in the update that needed to be updated on your computer. With Legacy 8, the whole update is downloaded and the selection process of which files in the install file to use and which to skip is made on your computer. So you're not saving download time by using the Home Tab - you're just saving yourself from the install process as where the file is and running it is all handled in the background. If you download the file from the website, you have a file you can use to update or install Legacy on another computer.
