Given that we generally work on one family or branch and then another and may not get back to a family for some time to realise that we made a stupid error - like applying the wrong source to a group of people or deleting people we thought at the time weren't relevant only to discover they are, or merging two people that we finally realise are not the same person - I think the more backups the better. It's often easier to correct by bringing the relevant people in again from a backup. At most I thin them down to one a week and earlier one a month - but they must be off your computer with some preferably out of the house as well.
The easiest way to do that is to backup to some form of Cloud storage - like Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive ... most of us have access to some free space in the cloud. If you are paranoid about privacy, then encrypt the files before putting them into the cloud storage. I don't. Do I use them much? No. But I have the peace of mind that they're there and I well remember being very pleased to find backups years old to recover some data.
