Barry, The best source in genealogical research and data recording for living people is the actual people. Call the couple and ask them for the details. Don't worry about if it's legal, as Brian suggested. Its not up to you as a gen researcher to track legalities, you just need the facts. Because a mother refers to the partner as a son-in-law doesn't mean they got married. My mom has considered my partner (now spouse) as a daughter or daughter-in-law for over 30 years. So just call them as you would a hetero couple to get the event facts correct.
