Thanks, Cathy.  This is to go with a book, rather long I'm afraid, between 500-600 A4 pages.  But not a lot of the tree is in the book, though some relevant chronologies, descendants and pedigree charts will be included.   Maybe I'll put the GEDCOM as well, then people will be covered.  Don't know how long in the future it will be till someone uses them.  Hopefully USBs will still be accessible when someone wants to follow it up.  I'll think about the Legacy books, too.
How can I test the GEDCOM - set up a separate folder and restore into it?  I've not taken in someone else's tree before, so haven't learnt how that works.  I assume I'll be importing and can decide what to call it and where to put it?  Then see what they'd be getting?

Hi Helen,
Yes it's encouraged to share Legacy by adding the free download of Legacy. There's an article on it somewhere.

Yes your database will work on the Standard Version - just some views and some features for using the data are locked.

Re Gedcom - Source information is transferred with a Gedcom. How much depends on the export settings - however SourceWriter sources are converted to Basic and aren't always pretty but in my experience understandable.

Additional idea: some of the recipients won't be happy with either Gedcom or Legacy database or will be more inclined to look at them if you include Ancestor and Descendant Charts and maybe Ancestor and Descendant books - all in PDF format.

I've got a small tree that I've created this year, to supplement my
husband's memoirs t hat have become an enormous book.   I'm planning on
providing the info that I've researched with the electronic book, to
save people reinventing the wheel and hopefully encouraging them to
continue what I started.  I had assumed I would do a GEDCOM file.  But
I see from a recent post that GEDCOM doesn't take source material
along with it.  So I'm thinking perhaps I should give them a folder
(electronic) with all the Legacy files and source files, etc.  And a
free copy of Legacy to install to access it, whenever that happens.

My question - I'm using Legacy Deluxe.   If I give them the free
version on a USB drive with the above:

1. am I right in assuming this is not a problem, in fact probably
encouraged, as new users may come from it?
2.  will what I've created work in Deluxe on it?

Does anyone see any problems, or better solutions?
