Hi Helen,

Gedcoms are imported. Even if the final destination is intended to be
your main family file (which obviously isn't the case for you in this
instance), you import a Gedcom to a new family file.
Note that is Import not Restore. Legacy backups are Restored. Gedcoms
are Imported.
Both from the File Ribbon/Menu.

Stan, including the Birthday Calendar is a great idea.
