I've had luck saving a Word doc as PDF and then attaching the PDF document as media - document. These are a graphic format, so maybe that's why it works. It opens again. Only thing is, a PDF doc isn't editable (unless you have the full Adobe Acrobat program), so if your document must be editable, then this won't be a good solution.
