Thanks John just to reassure you that I've had plenty of practice at this so I understand the issues even if I cant always fix them.
I deliberately sleep it and its set to sleep automatically if I leave it unattended too long. In fact I use hybrid sleep and my PC is on a UPS so sleep is a low-risk solution and gives me instant power-up and low energy usage. Yes, its set to wake on a mouse click etc. You're quite right - I could just leave the system running and let the monitors power down. I have an SSD so there are no disks spinning except in the NAS, so the power usage would be relatively low. If the power goes off, the UPS would shut the PC and NAS down gracefully after a few minutes so that would work OK. The alternative I was considering was to house the legacy files on my SSD (better performance) and use syncing to ensure the NAS is updated. Windows7 has "offline files always available" capability but I can't get that to work at the moment so I might just set up a scheduled sync from the SSD to the NAS once or twice a day. I suspect you can access an .fdb file from two computers successfully so long as you avoid updating the same records - thats fairly easy if there is only one human involved! I do this routinely using Legacy and Access2000 queries on the same PC. Generally I avoid using Access to update the file but Ive done this (carefully) from time to time with success and no corruption - with Legacy open at the same time. I think I may have opened it with Legacy on two PCs thru file sharing too but its been a while since I tried that. Thanks for your suggestion - I might give the "no sleep" idea a try.
