I think it may be best to move everything from D: to C: on your
desktop. Otherwise on your desktop it will look for media on D:. Then
when you copy the family data files to the laptop I think(?) will still
expect media to be on D: (I think so anyway - I haven't tested this).
So I'd suggest identical data folders on both computers, both on drive C:.

You CAN use your own folder naming structure for your DATA (family file
and media). You do not need to save the data in Legacy's default data
folder. But I would suggest you let the Legacy PROGRAM files get put in
Legacy's default folders. In another e-mail when Cathy said this:

Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ folder is
created when you install Legacy 8. This folder can't be renamed or moved
for Legacy 8 to work as it has a folder in it that stores your Legacy
settings.

she was correct - you can't rename that folder because Legacy stores
some SETTINGS there. But it does NOT mean you HAVE to store your DATA
at Legacy's default location. It is your choice.

For example, I got tired of Windows relocating "MY DOCUMENTS" folder to
different places for different versions of windows. So I created a
folder called:
C:\windata
and I store much of my data in subfolders under that. (of course some
programs fight you if you don't use MY DOCUMENTS, but Legacy is nice
about it.)

Another option would be to split your laptop drive into a C: and D: (one
physical drive can be two logical drives). There are some good
partitioning programs out there that make it FAIRLY easy, but I'd lean
towards leaving your laptop drive as one drive. (If you do decide to
split it, be sure you make a GOOD FULL backup of your laptop C: drive
before you split it!!! Repartitioning a hard drive CAN go terribly
wrong sometimes - even if you make sure you are using a
"non-destructive" partition program things can go wrong.)
