I transfer my data files from my desktop to my laptop and back again every day, using a USB flash drive. Another possibility is to use something like Dropbox to sync your files. I keep my legacy data files on my desktop in a directory called E:\leg8data and in my laptop in a directory called C:\leg8data. I use four batch files, two on my desktop computer and two on my laptop: dsk2flsh, flsh2dsk, flsh2lap and lap2flsh. here is the relevant bit from dsk2flsh.bat: XXCOPY E:\Leg8data\*.* J:\Leg8data\ /BN /s /y and from flsh2dsk.bat XXCOPY J:\Leg8data\*.* E:\Leg8data\ /BN /s /y xxcopy is an extension to the COPY command in Windows XP that lets you copy only changed files (the batch file copies not only Legacy, but a whole lot of other data files as well. The /BN switch accomplishes that and the /s switch copies things from subdirectories, including photos etc. Windows 7 and higher has a built-in command that does something similar. J: is the drive letter assigned to the USB flash drive. So when I want to go and work on the laptop I just type dsk2flsh, and in a couple of minutes everything is copied, and by the time the laptop has booted up I just need to take the flash drive, put it in the laptop and type flsh2lap. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: [email protected] Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
