Also, "soc.genealogy.medieval" is not only very active, but most of the posts are from prestigious scholars in the world of medieval history, languages, as well as genealogy. Corrections to Cockayne's Complete Peerage have been made as new documents are discovered, exposure of many of the much too well-circulated confused pedigrees, which, unfortunatelystill circulate, et alia. Too many are more interested in padding their genealogies than in investigating whether they are true or not. The easiest way to acces it is: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/soc.genealogy.medieval.

Also forums like ROOTSCHAT with lots of categories of subject. I don’t know where you are but soc.genealogy.britain is still quite active on USENET and sure there are similar for other areas as well more general ones. Many local Family History Societies have mailing lists (or use a ROOTSWEB one for their area) if it is their own members’ only list then they can be a useful place to get help on a range of subjects. Can you recommend any general genealogy mailing lists? (As opposed to the many lists I'm finding that focus on a particular surname/family or cultural group.) I know there are lots of Facebook groups, but I find them a poor substitute for mailing lists.TIA,Charlene
