Ian,

There are so many ways to identify your direct line ancestors.
1) set relationships (and you can add column in Index View to show the relationship)
2) set Ancestor colours
3) set Direct Line AND check the relevant checkbox in Options - Customise 3.8 so that the direct line shows in Bold. You can set Direct line for anyone in order to set the preferred child in various lines so you can use the quick navigation of clicking next to the child list. However, always set your own again last so that your ancestor John Smith shows in bold in the Index View etc.
4) set tags if you've got them to spare
5) add comment in privacy brackets to one of the name fields

If you really want to have the same surname in all caps and in mixed case. When adding a new person, you'll need to click the down arrow and select from the list if the wrong one auto completes.
You may also need to use the down arrow and then add your variant there.

John, that would be the quickest and easiest method (tags are so
easily “attached”); then the lastname CAPS settings would suit
everyone’s preferences (on screen, and printed).

I’m still coming to grips with Notes and Sources – I’m still wearing
Learner plates for both genealogy research and this software (which is
excellent).

Hi Ian

I use tags for recording my relationships. Having been married twice I
use tag 1 for all the relations of the children of my second marriage
and tag 3 for those of my first. When I open the family view for an
individual I can immediately see, in the tag fields, to which side of
the family an individual is connected. Anyone who is tagged in both
categories is then by default a blood relative of mine.

Hello,

I set my files up so that I have an index and tagging system that
shows the relation to me.

That way I can tell at a glance which person is mine. By setting
the relationship settings high enough, I can see how deep the
'cousins' go. Most of the time, I do not search for anyone born
after about 1950, but since those folks are now in their 60's, it
is time to begin checking up on them.

I use Tag #3 because it shows up on the Name list and I do not
have to change the settings. Also, since I know what it is being
used for, I do not mess with it once the relationships are set up.
I do update the relationships when I have been adding or deleting
folks.

I use the far left col of the regular index for my Relationship
Col. The folks who are not related have a blank in the Col, so it
is easy to see who is not related and equally easy to see who is a
5th cousin 2x removed.

I do not use RIN's on the Index - Customizing the index is very
helpful.

I hope this helps.
