Or the locking file needs to be deleted manually. Probably copied over from the 
failed hard drive?

 

Make sure Legacy is not running. Using Windows / File Explorer, navigate to 
wherever your family database file is normally stored. Look for a file that has 
a .LDB extension and delete it. Problem solved.

It is possible that you have Legacy Family Search or Legacy Charting still open

For about a month now, every time I open up Legacy I get the message saying 
Family File is in use.  It says it appears that this family file was opened by 
another user.  I'm the only user.  My hard drive failed a couple of months ago 
and I had to reinstall Legacy and the backup files on the new hard drive.  It 
seemed the message appeared soon after that.  How can I correct this because I 
cannot backup now because it keeps telling me that the Family File is in use.
