It's not Legacy that limits the path length. All Windows systems limit the length to 260 characters.
Windows 10, however, allows you to change the maximum length: "May 29, 2016 at 13:20 GMT The maximum length for a path (file name and its directory route) - also known as MAX_PATH - has been defined by 260 characters. But with the latest Windows 10 Insider preview, Microsoft is giving users the ability to increase the limit. The recent most Windows 10 preview is enabling users to change the 260 characters limit. As mentioned in the description, "Enabling NTFS long paths will allow manifested win32 applications and Windows Store applications to access paths beyond the normal 260 char limit per node." If you wish to utilize this feature, however, you will be required to make some edits to using Group Policy. Follow the steps below: 1. Open Group Policy Editor (Press Windows Key and type gpedit.msc and hit Enter key. 2. Navigate to the following directory: Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > NTFS. 3. Click Enable NTFS long paths option and enable it." PROBLEM The "aaNEW FILING METHOD 2015" part of the path needs to be deleted for all of my source media in Legacy as paths are becoming too long for Legacy to handle. Reference to the 2015 filing method is also no longer relevant. The problem is not within Internet Explorer as I can easily move the surname folders directly under the Genealogy Master Images folder, then delete the intervening aaNEW FILING METHOD 2015 sub-folder. QUESTIONS 1. Will Legacy be able to find my source media if I remove the aaNEW FILING METHOD 2015 sub-folder from the path? 2. Is there a way to make a global change rather than having to change the path for each individual document or photo? Many thanks, Priscilla Glasow
