MS Word has had an auto save feature since the DOS versions more than two
decades ago.

In the current version of Word, select File > Options and select Save. You will
find several options in the Save documents group, including a frequency of auto
save (in minutes).

Best,

Denise

Thank you very much Cathy. Seems that Legacy saves automatically as I go along,
unlike MS Word for example, where CTRL+S is required. I think that's where I
went awry, thinking I had to "save". A backup in Legacy is a "save" but not the
same as MS Word. Not sure I'm making any sense, since I'm still just a tad
confused.

Thanks again,

Gloria

Gloria,
These paths are both showing an fdb file inside a Zip folder.
Do not open files from within zips.
Do not use your backups unless you have an emergency.

Temp folders are emptied by various different processes. If you ever notice
your file is in a temp folder again (on the Legacy Title bar), get it out
immediately using Save As and choosing a sensible folder to save it into.

Do check where your real file is. You may find you have more than one. Use
this to help you.

The backup is not your saved file. It's a zip which should be saved off of your
computer for emergencies.

Also check which file is set to open when you open Legacy. You set this and
check it at Options - Customise 1.2
I think the default is "l ast used" but it's safer to set Always open this one
and find the file in the right folder. You should set that folder as your
default folder at Options - Customise 6.1

Hi Cathy and Gail,

I wondered about the file name. I open Legacy using the Legacy icon in
my task bar at the bottom of my Windows 10 computer. Before I tried
your suggestions Cathy, my file name was

Legacy - [C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\TEMP2_~1.zip\FamilyTree.fdb]

I did that File - Restore. When my filename didn't change to the name
I chose - Family Tree - I tried the File - Save As. My file name is now

Legacy - [C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\TEMP2_Family Tree
2017-01-17 5.15.33 PM.zip\Family Tree.fdb]

I obviously am blindly just doing whatever. I don't find Legacy
intuitive. How am I suppose to open Legacy? I did a search on Legacy's
webs ite, and once again, results were not helpful. When I do open
Legacy the "right" way (if I'm doing it right) Legacy keeps opening to
an older file of Family Tree even though I thought I saved my
temporary file to the latest save. No wonder I just kept using the
file I wasn't suppose to open and use.

If I'm confusing, it's because I'm confused.

    Gail,

That's a sign that you have opened the file from within a Backup
    zip file.
They end up in weird places. If you do it often you'll find that
the number in square brackets proliferates.
Backups should be restored in Legacy using File - Restore.
You can see the content of a Backup zip in File Exp lorer but you
shouldn't double click on the Legacy file inside a Zip folder.

To recover: With the file open in Legacy use File - Save As to
    save it somewhere sensible.

Also read this up. Legacy can find all your files in a few minutes.

If your family file normally has a date after the name, then
you're always opening it the wrong way unless you didn't mean the
    current date?

        Hi Folks:
I have been having a difficult time finding one of my family
data files anywhere on my computer.
After many days of searching... I managed to find one.
This is the location it gives me:
        Legacy –
        [C:\Users\Gail\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary
        Internet Files\Content.IE5\YCM1GS78\Hennessy_Family_22 Jan
   &n bsp; 2017[1].fdb]
after the word content, that character is a upper case i, but
        won’t type. (different problem)
I never knowingly made that file that long or that content, at
least knowingly. Usually it is Hennessy Family 22 Jan 2017.fdb
I don’t know how to fix this. Any help out there?
        Thanks, Gail
