Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Big Question

Hi Barbara

Never be concerned about asking this question - it is one that we
have all had to do once or twice, or in my case thrice since I started with
Legacy 5.

On a general basis, moving one from version to the next is never a
problem and the conversion will generate a new set of Legacy files,
restructured if needed and with your data transferred over. The same process can occur during an update within the same version if they needed to make structural changes. Of course, any version of the data will only be usable
with the current or later version of Legacy.

Converting directly from V6 to V8 can be an issue, and the usual
process would be to convert to V7 and then to V8. For a better answer to
that you should send the question directly to the support team, through
their web pages.

As I recall, earlier versions of Legacy always used to place the
executable code and the data bases in the C:\Legacy folder. Personally, I always set the system, from the Options, to place the data files where I wanted them to be. That system changed, certainly from V8 and possibly from V7, to locate the executables into C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy8 (64bit Win 7 version) or C:\Program Files\Legacy8 (32bit Win 7 version). For the data
files, they moved them to E:\Users\Chris\Documents\Legacy Family Tree
(volume and system user account will be different) since Win 7 likes to
block access (by default) to the Program Files group. Again, I have also changed that to E:\Users\Chris\Documents\Chris\Genealogy\Hill and related
families\Family Tree, but that would not be so significant now.

In generic terms, all versions of Legacy do the same job, with
improvements and additions as needed. Going to V8, compared to V5-->V6-->V7
did through up a few major changes, and a minor since Charting is
integrated.

Within the program, they a placed a new sourcing system which had
much more functionality and allows for a Master Source to be created and then be referred in multiple source records. The older style source method
is still in place, but the new one is much better.

They moved away from the traditional Windows menu bar into an Office
2007 menu bar with the main sub-menus replaced by a bar of Icons below the
menu.

They have implemented the ability to create an entry in the
Events/Facts on an individual and then associate it will multiple
individuals, as a link. So now you can create a census record for the Head, including details on the other members, and link those to the same event
record. That stops having to create duplicate records on each person.

There are, of course, a lot of other changes and improvements, but
those are the major ones for me.

Does V8 work on Win 10 - yes it does and very well. I normally work
in Win 7 on my desktop (and have technical reasons why I cannot update that
to Win 10) and I use Win 10 on my laptop.

Would V6 run on Win 10 - yes it should. All versions of Win from XP
onwards are code compatible, even allowing for the screwed up version called
Win 8 (fixed to a degree by Win 8.1).

Is Win 10 different from Win 7. Not really. Yes, some of the terms
are different but Win 7 to Win 10 is a smaller difference from Win XP to Win 7. A lot of the 'problems' with Win 10 is because it was based on Win 8 that was designed for a tablet system. Let's roll desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile et al all into one system - good idea, but why didn't Apple take that route.

And please ignore the rumours about Win 10 updates which will
disable the old 32bit interfaces and functionality. Sure, Microsoft could but they lost badly with Win 8, so now Win 10 is basically Win 8 with a Win
7 front-end.

So, make the move, keep both versions of executable and data, and
compare them. You will not want to go back.

And, of course, there is Legacy V9 in development - and that will
make changes to the system and data.

And my background is 47 years in IT, retired IT Manager and still
doing consultancy.

Regards

Chris

Subject: [LegacyUG] Big Question

Okay, I'm nervous about asking this, because the answer is sort of a big deal in my world! Seriously, please don't judge me, but I have to confess that I am still running Legacy 6 Deluxe (on Windows 7 Professional). That's right, I have not updated in all this time. It took me a long time to get
comfortable with how Legacy works, and I simply didn't want to rock the
boat, since it was working for me.

However, I am now trying to get all my ducks in a row for the possibility of a new laptop, and I'm fairly certain I will want/need the latest version of Legacy when I do that. So, I'm thinking I should go ahead now and update Legacy while I still have an operating system I understand, so that once I am forced to go to Windows 10 (by virtue of buying a new laptop), at least I'll already be comfortable with the Legacy 8 software. I believe I have read that Legacy 8 does work with Windows 7 (and I'm sure it is compatible
with Windows 10 as well).

Bottom line question here: to avoid the group involvement in all my
questions about this process, etc., is there someone who would be willing to
answer my questions/walk me through some of this outside the group?

I have a few questions that I need to understand before I actually try the
update.

Thank you,
Barb Ford
