I cleared then set relationships, quit Legacy v9, no backup, started again and tested the 2 half-brothers and the error has not reappeared. Thanks for the suggestion, Cathy. All fixed, I believe.

You are further down. All the same it might be worth resetting Relationships. with the Set Relationships tool. You have to reset if you have merged or deleted anyone or changed links. You also have to reset periodically when adding new people. The automatic assigning of relationships only goes so far. Did the error message have a number?
