Hi

As a retired IT Manager, programmer and developer I would agree that LTools would be a risk. Looking at his website, as far as I can tell, nothing has been updated since Aug 2014 apart from one reference to a patch to LTools in Aug 2015. That would suggest that he is no longer doing any development.

That is because it is dependent on its developer being totally aware of the internal structure of the Legacy database, in terms of the underlying tables, the fields within them and the way that they are linked, along with any additional files that Legacy might create, and I have never understood why they are not within the main database. That structure is, of course, totally under the control of the Legacy developers and presumably subject to copyright rules, until Legacy make them publicly available.

Having said that, I have used M/S Access, on a duplicate copy of my database, to view some of the fields and links in order to resolve some very odd issues. Using LTools or Access to make changes to the data is possible, so long as the user, and LTools developer, KNOWS exactly what they are changing and why. There are very good reasons to do this type of modification since there may be no functionality built into Legacy capable of making changes to some of the data, especially with a need to make changes generically across a subset of the data.

With time and effort I could generate an equivalent to LTools based on the current version of Legacy, but then that would need ongoing support as Legacy modifies the system, and would probably be in breach of copyright. As such, a program like that should be developed by the Legacy developers, and not by its users, and should be built into the main Legacy program.

Regards

Chris

LTools is not a Legacy sponsored program - Dennis was totally on his
own with it.

When Legacy added Shared Events, Dennis had difficulty updating LTools
to work with all the changes in the program. There are even larger
data schema changes in v9.

Some parts of LTools work fine with Legacy v8 and 9. On the LTools
menu, there's a link to compatibility with v8
http://zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/legacy-v8-compatibility/ Tidy
HTML tool will work since it doesn't access the database itself.

He also has a warning on his site

"This toolkit’s intended audience is the “advanced” Legacy user.
Casual Legacy users who are not comfortable with computers in general
are encouraged NOT to use LTools. In addition, users who are NOT
familiar with general backup and recovery strategies AND Legacy’s
Backup/Restore functionality should not attempt to use LTools."

I haven't been active on this form for a number of years but I do read some of the posts from time to time to keep up with what's new. I do however miss a lot of the info that comes across. So, if my comments have already been
addressed I apologize.

Regarding website manipulation: There is a program that allows someone with
a not too in depth knowledge of html and css to create better looking
websites from the pages generated by the Legacy program. Dennis Kowallek
created the program utility LTools a few years back when Legacy was on
version 7, I believe, and it continues to work on version 8. I,ve purchased Legacy version 9 but I haven't upgraded my S/W yet because I'm not sure if Legacy 9 works with the last version of LTools. I just haven't had the need to update or investigate the compatibility. However, Dennis closed down his Ltools business and started offering LTools free and I have a copy of his
last release.

I've not seen any comments on this forum about LTools in a long time and
don't know if it works with Legacy 9 but it looks like it can still be
downloaded at http://www.zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/download-ltools
(if you care to try it)

Or maybe someone here has tried it and can chime in.

My latest site was created a few years ago. Check this example Legacy
created page... http://www.glsmall.com/10.htm (Colors and fonts were done with LTools. Other html things were done entirely with html capabilities
inside Legacy.
