David, It depends where you need them off.
eg The Privacy Options on all output allows you to include Private events whether the Master Event has been made private or the particular instance of the Event has been made private. So if you're doing an Individual or Family Group Report you can just choose to include Private Events and not change the Privacy flags.

I've done this to make sure my events don't get exported when I do Gedcoms, but I have a need temporarily to turn all these tags off, just for this one person.
