Tom,

You can save things wherever you like, but never in a Programs Files folder.

I think if you mistakenly open your database from within a backup zip, it goes to a temp folder rather than the Virtual Store but I may be mistaken.

Which version of Legacy are you using? If you install a version of Legacy before Legacy 8 into Program Files then all sorts of things will end up in the Virtual Store as previous versions constantly wrote to the Program folder.

For Legacy 8 and up, wherever you keep your Legacy data file, you should tell Legacy at Options > Customise 6.1 if you are not using the Legacy default of C:\Users\<yourusername>\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\

Note you cannot delete or rename this folder: C:\Users\<yourusername>\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ as the \_AppData\ folder within it is used for your Legacy settings. That folder is hardwired into the program. If your Documents folder has been properly moved, the section before \Documents\ will be different.

Never mind - figured it out.

Thanks for your reply. I created a folder C:\Legacydata and copied all data files there. So far so good.

I then opened a file, created a descendant report and attempted to save it as a pdf - now that doesn't work. Not saving to Legacydata. It wants to save to ThisPC>Document>LegacyFamilyTree>Data (or four other choices.

Is there a setting in Options/Customize I missed?

Hi

Win 10 will not allow your programs to create files or folders directly below C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86), since these are restricted to programs. That is being dealt with by using C:\Users\.....\AppData\Local\VirtualStore as a way to get around that limitation, but Explorer does not like following through this unless you force it.

With Legacy9 they moved the user files *away from* the program folder, which I think was C:\Legacy, and into C:\Users\.....\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ and this is where your should find the settings and the sample database. The database would normally be in C:\Users\.....\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data and the media in C:\Users\.....\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media or C:\Users\.....\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\Sample-Media.

You can change that location within Options 6.1 and 6.2 so that you can put your files elsewhere, so mine are in E:\Users\Chris\Documents\Chris\Genealogy\Hill and related families\Family Tree\ and E:\Users\Chris\Documents\Chris\Genealogy\Hill and related families\Family Tree\Media.

Regards

Chris

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy Files Not showing Up in Windows Explorer

Recent family tree files and pdfs of reports are not showing up in the proper location.

I googled “files not showing up in Windows Explorer and found this:

The correct answer is because of the "VirtualStore." Programs are permitted to write to their "Program Files" folder for legacy reasons, but they do not have privileges to do so, so they get transparently redirected to "C:\Users\"User"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)" This causes the files a program saves to its Program Files folder to appear there WHEN IN THAT PROGRAM(or other programs that have saved to the Program Files before), but not in Explorer, making you question your sanity.

Here is where my files are:

C:\Users\tomgw\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Legacy9\Data

They should be in C:\Programfiles (x86)\Legacy9\Data

I tried to copy one of the files to the proper location and it said I needed administrator privileges to do so. What the heck is going on? How do I fix this and stop it from recurring?
