Jim omits any comment on the limitations to this method that raised the issue
originally. Occupations in Events cannot be displayed on any screens in family
view, etc as can many other lesser events like "Phone 2." Event-Occupations cannot
be displayed in reports that do not print all events, like Pedigree Charts. For
users who want to overcome those limitations by displaying a single, primary
occupation [both on screens and in reports that do not include all Events], then
putting it in Title Suffix should not cause any more GEDCOM problems than putting
approved "President of the United States" or "King of England" there. The problems
created by using User I.D. or other possible fields that would create problems
should not deter users from using Title Suffix, when it is common for people today
to add their profession (occupation) or political position (occupation) after their
names.
Millennia could reduce this problem if one occupation could be displayed on the
family view screen as Phone 2 can be displayed. If we are wrong, please explain
why. Best regards, Larry

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] "occupation" in Family View and charts
I enter occupations as an event which is tied to a date and place. That way
I can record as many occupations for a person as apply. For example, the
1870 and 1880 US censuses of Kansas show my great-granfather as a farmer. An
1892 city directory shows he was a stone mason while living in Colorado and
the 1900 census show him to be a minister in Salem, Oregon.
Legacy does not have a specific field designated for occupation The problem
of entering occupations into fields not meant for them will cause problems
for others if you export a GEDCOM file to them. I have a relative who put
occupations in the USER ID field in Legacy and it was a mess moving them all
one by one into events or notes.
