Yes there are "proper" ways to source documents and other things
such as gravestones, interviews and other sources that are used in
genealogy. There are at least two books written on the topic. I have
Elizabeth Show Mill's book "Evidence! Citation and Analysis for the
Family Historian". Also Legacy has published CD-ROM with training
on how to use their product and one CD covers sourcing in Legacy.
The CD's are excellent.

On the other hand you can just source things the way you want to.
It is afterall your file. The general rule for sourcing is to make it
easy for you or someone else, perhaps years from now after you
have died, to be able to locate the source of the information you
put into your database. I think you will find that as your database
grows, it will be very handy for you to be able to check back on
where you got particular information from.
