I use the following methods. This shows me at a glance who they are, but using double brackets [[ ]] prevents it from showing up in reports. It also helps to know which "Jane" it is when doing a merge.

First name: Jane [[sp- John Thirst]]
Last name: [----]

or if I know John Thirst had more than 1 wife,

First name Jane [[sp 1- John Thirst]]
Last name: [----]

First name: Sarah [[sp 2- John Thirst]]
Last name: [----]

If I know the last name, but not the first, I use:

First name: [----] [[sp- Margaret Brown]]
Last name: Humble

This can be adopted to child: [[ch- George Low]]
or
father or mother: [[fr- Jane Smith]]

I've tried several ideas, but I like this the best.

Kathy
