So I thought and discovered that you can't in this particular Master List if the status you wish to combine has any people attached.

You can fix this for everybody quickly, provided that you want to change all Father:natural; Mother:natural to blank. Go to Children's Settings for any family and click on the blue arrow next to Child Status. This brings up a list of choices. You can then combine Father:natural; Mother:natural with the blank space to remove the former.
