Stuart, Here are my findings:
(1) IPTC information is always ignored. (2) If ANY EXIF information is present JPG comment is ignored. (3) If no EXIF information is present, Legacy prompts to add JPG comment if it exists). (4) If EXIF description is present, Legacy prompts to add description. (5) If you ever uncheck the box on the include comment screen, you will never be prompted again. To get the prompt back, edit line 388 of the Legacy.usr file, change 0 to 1. It has been my experience that Legacy will copy (or offer to copy) the JPEG comment field to the Legacy description field. This is using IRFANVIEW, FastStone, FotoAlbumPro, and ADOBE software. I generally use the IPTC fields rahter than the EXIF fields, due to greater editing support for IPTC. I am 100% certain that JPEG comments can be copied to the Legacy description field. Nothing is straightforward, as there is no standardisation between the various EXIF, IPTC and JPEG fields in the various imaging software that I use. Paint Shop Pro puts JPEG comments under its Creator Information tab, and puts the EXIF description field under a heading it calls Image Title. ThumbsPlus, Exifer and Irfanview uses Comment and Description for JPEG comment and EXIF description respectively. I use the JPEG comment field to add info as to where I took the photo or where I found the photo or document (or the repository) and I use the EXIF description field to to enter pertinent data regarding the image. For example, with a family group picture I will add something like "Gregory family Christmas 1955 L to R: Sally and Henry Gregory, their daughter Mary, Fred Flinstone (family friend)" etc. My test involved totally different words in the JPEG comment field to those in the EXIF description field. Legacy picked up the EXIF description field at the time of linking the image. It did not offer to copy the JPEG comment field. I then used a different image with only a JPEG comment (no EXIF description) to see if Legacy could use both and was prioritising EXIF description over JPEG comment. Legacy did not offer to copy the data from the JPEG comment field. >From this little test I believe Legacy is picking up only the EXIF description field and offering to copy this data into the description field when linking images within Legacy. It is not picking up the JPEG comment field data. BTW, I have been using the EXIF description field for this purpose for some time, but I have never before carried out the comparison with JPEG comments as above.
