I apologize for having doubted you Cathy. Somehow I had missed the part
about using only one tab, so I kept having problems with your solution.
Steve explaind to me how to correct the problem by changing the fonts in a
clear and concise manner that even I could understand. So I used his
solution. Now but I know that my mistake was in using more than one tab, I
can use your method and choose the font that I want. Thank-you.

I have a lot of friends to use computers, but many of them get freaked out
if they have to go beyond the program to tweak it so that it will do what
they think it should do without them having to be a programmer. Many of
them only understand the program that they use, such as a word processor and
nothing else about the computer.

This is a fundamental bug that appears to have been in legacy for a long
time. I wonder how many people try to use legacy and liked it, but when it
came to using the notes, they discovered that their reports were not
printing out the way they look on the screen, and they did not belong to
this user group, so they gave up. That's unfortunate. I am somewhat
computer literate, so I'm not intimidated when things do not go the way that
I think they should, I just look for a solution.

In the past, I have looked at many other genealogical programs, but I always
came back to legacy. The ease of use, the features available, and just
about everything, with the exception of the chart options, are far superior
to any of the program that I have played with.

You would think that the layout that you use the notes and see on the screen
would be the same that you would see in the reports. I don't understand why
legacy doesn't see the importance of correcting this will bug. Of course,
I'm not a programmer and I know that they use access as their data base, and
the notes section in access is not programmed like a word processor. Maybe
this particular bug is harder to fix than many of us think it is. Still, I
wonder how many people has ran into this problem, did not sign up for the
user list, just got frustrated with their report, gave up, changed to
another program, and went on about their business.

Get my point Legacy? Overall I think your program is great, and I'd like to
see everybody using it. But, I don't think that this bug is one that you
should take for granted. Not that he I think you have a buggy program,
because I don't. It has been my experience that most bugs that people find
in your program turns out to be the person operating the program. -that
includes me. However, this particular problem, I think you should give some
thought too. Think about it, if you had to spend a lot of time entering a
lot of data without realizing that you cannot line up things and keep them
lined up in the notes when you go to print the report. Well, it can turn
into a very frustrating situation to the uninitiated.

Sorry Cathy, I just thought that I would take this opportunity to share my
thoughts with Legacy, because I know that they read these things.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] fighting with columns in the event notes

Hi Dave,
That's the explanation - the use of spaces and one tab (use CRTL+Tab if you
are typing within Legacy) in the name column and other uneven columns seems
important. Two tabs together show differently on screen and printer.

I emailed off list so I could sent attachments or embedded pictures showing
that I had succeeded. I have a Multiple Line of Descent book of over 400
pages with many census events in it. Most are beautifully lined up. The
ones I adjusted first as I was learning that multiple tabs don't work so
well are a little wonky but not bad.

This is with default fonts on both screen and report.

Cheers,
Cathy
