Documenting it how it happened *might* help jog someone else's memory as well. "Oh. Yeah. I remember that... whenever Uncle Fred saw a red convertible, he would mention that..." I'm thinking that anything you can do to help other people remember things is good, and by documenting the situation as best you can, you let later people evaluate the information. That's a rather verbose way of saying "Janet, it sounds like you're on the right track. Keep doing what you're doing!"
