Hi Ruth,

Your enquiry really interests me as I have had the same discussion with my brother in law this afternoon. He would use the term Granduncle whereas I have always used Greatuncle.

Like you I looked it up in a dictionary (UK) and it says the two terms are synonymous. However if the mother's uncle is the Greatuncle then what is the title of the mother's father wrt the (?)nephew?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Greatuncle vs Granduncle

I've always used the term Greatuncle when referring to my Mother's Uncle. Legacy uses Granduncle. The dictionary uses Greatuncle as the first term, and Granduncle as the second term in defining my Mother's Uncle.

Is there some reason Legacy uses Grand instead of Great?
