This has come up before, Carl - a couple of threads last autumn. I'm another
one who will not be upgrading to v.6 unless either I get broadband or
something changes with the updates. One of the things raised last autumn was
whether the Research Guidance feature (new in v.6) could be made optional,
as this is a very large chunk of the download. Apparently Support are aware
of the problem, but at that stage there was no news on whether the
programmers would be making this change.
Alternatively, downloading only changed components would also be acceptable
to me (so long as I did the initial install off a CD), though as far as I
know, Legacy has never done it this way, and I don't know if it could.

I have the same problem, with dial-up connection at 26.1k top speed. I
would think that an upgrade over the web would only download the changed
components, and should be quite quick. 4 hours or more is just not doable
from here. (Evidently most people have fast connections, because no one
else has responded to this problem.)
