Mike, wjr,

Thanks for the posts. Here is a little more detail on our situation. I bought
the
Discovery set back on 2000 which has the Scout brick, so I guess that was
pre-RIS 1.0. I used it with our then 6 year old son. We built the robots in
the
book but the programming options were limited, so haven't used it for a while.

Our son in now 11 years old, and I think he is ready to get back into building
these robots. I'm a computer programmer (and like Java a lot), so would like
to teach our 11 year old programming. I'm not able to get him interesting
in the "Hello World", calculate prime number programs at this point, but do
know he is interested in programming an a progam to make a robot move
 might do the trick.

So, I recently pulled that "Discovery set" out, with the Scout brick.
Initially
I didn't know the distinctions between the "Scout", RCX 1.0, 1.5 or RCX 2.0.
So, I just though I needed the IR transmitter and that was it. After getting
the transmitter (without a CD to my suprise), I discovered that the "Blue
brick"
was not an RCX. So, now I'm looking for a "yellow brick" and extra sensors
on eBay, since we have truck loads of legos.

So, if I understand right from the lejos point of view there is NO difference
between
RCX 1.0 and 2.0 (although 1.0) has a power outlet?

I'm going to look at all of those kits you mentioned.

Alan

Do not get the robo technology (9786) set (unless, of course, you don't
want to build any robots). Get the team challenge (9790) set that's
about $50 more. It includes all the parts from the RIS 1.0 & 2.0 sets
and an extra light sensor. The robo technology set, which I have one of,
has 217 pieces vs 726 in team challenge.
