Hi Robin, I agree with Kirk. The first step for your son should be to use the software that comes with Lego NXT. It's made for kids to program with and is easy to use.
leJOS (Java) is for more advanced users who want a more powerful system to develop with. If you still want to try leJOS, let us know and we can help you out. BTW You want the Java SDK (sometimes called the JDK).
