Thanks for the info Brian.   I know that my son does want to get to the point 
where he can do some programming, but at this point I'd just like to get the 
NXT to a point where he can use it and play around with some of the basics.

I agree with Kirk. The first step for your son should be to use the software 
that comes with Lego NXT. It's made for kids to program with and is easy to 
use.

leJOS (Java) is for more advanced users who want a more powerful system to 
develop with. If you still want to try leJOS, let us know and we can help 
you out.

BTW You want the Java SDK (sometimes called the JDK). The JRE you stumbled 
on does not provide enough to let you program new code yourself.
