For clarification, let's use the following labels for the different
states that an outline node can be in:

unselected mode = no background color
grayed mode = gray background
Command mode =  light green background
Insert mode = light red background

The command and insert modes can be either active (border around
node's headline text) or inactive (no border).

A reference to a node's state could be something like: "Clicking on a
inactive command mode node when the outline has focus will ..."

"Clicking" refers to a left mouse click.
"focus" refers to an outline that is currently active (black border
around outline's window).
