It seems to me that 2) is the simplest thing that could possibly
work.  Both the 'install' script and the 'setup.py' script seem to
cause confusion.

For b4 I'm going to remove 'install', 'uninstall' and 'setup.py' from
the distribution.  I'll change the installation notes accordingly.
Let's see whether that is any improvement.
