Done on the trunk at rev 1439.

I significantly improved tracing in the base class. The qt gui plugin
will benefit.

The wx plugin now draws the screen acceptably. The wx.expand/
contractItem methods must call w.SelectItem. This is bizarre, but
nothing more than that.

Alas, there is unacceptable flash while redrawing. I remember
spending a lot of time trying to fix this by buffering the draw, with
no joy. I asked for help from the wx people, again with no joy. I
bear some responsibility for the lack of help--relations between me
and the wx community were never on a truly cordial footing.

It appears that my comments about wx events were indeed completely
unfounded. I'm not seeing anything in the traces that would cause
problems.

Present status

1. I shall certainly move the wxGui plugin back into the experimental
folder soon. It's time to move on. Devoting much more work on the wx
plugin makes no sense now. OTOH, there is no need to bad-mouth wx. I
think this plugin could be made to work.

2. I shall get the menus working again in the wx plugin. It shouldn't
take long, and it will show the true status of the wx plugin. I think
that's important. I want to encourage people who need wx for some
reason to work on the wx plugin.
