I think we could have both - retaining current code, while still
attempting to simplify the situation for some cases (i.e. use
different code). Therefore, we would keep the current colorizers while
providing "optimized" colorizers for some languages (python/c comes to
mind).

For 4.6, I think we can just assume that the current functionality is
as good as it gets in the short term - we just need to fix the
problems with disabling the syntax highlighter altogether.
